Devonshire Place is a broad residential street in the medical quarter of Marylebone, running parallel to and east of Harley Street. It carries a W1G postcode and sits within the territory managed historically by the Portland Estate, the landholding that ultimately passed into the hands of the Howard de Walden family and shaped the character of this part of the neighbourhood.
The street was laid out between approximately 1788 and 1800 under the supervision of builder and surveyor John White, who oversaw much of the Portland Estate's development during this period. It took its present name by 1791, reflecting the close family connection between the Dukes of Portland and the Duke of Devonshire. The original houses were built with large frontages, and the majority survive. Among the street's early residents was William Beckford, the millionaire author of the Gothic novel Vathek, who lived at No. 4.
At the northern end of the street stands The London Clinic, one of England's largest independent hospitals. Founded by a group of Harley Street doctors, the building was designed by Charles Henry Biddulph-Pinchard and formally opened in 1932 by the Duchess of York. The clinic now spans seven buildings and remains a significant anchor of the area's long-established medical identity.
