Gee's Court is a narrow pedestrian passage in W1C, running north from Oxford Street to connect with Barrett Street and St Christopher's Place. It was laid out in the 1760s and takes its name from John Gee, a builder active in the area during the 1770s. For much of the nineteenth century the court was a dense and poorly ventilated slum: a coroner's inquest in 1857 recorded that there was barely sufficient air for a mushroom to grow. The passage has since been pedestrianised and now functions as a retail and cafe thoroughfare, giving Oxford Street shoppers a cut-through into the quieter streets of Marylebone to the north.
