Great Cumberland Mews is a cobbled, T-shaped cul-de-sac in W1H, running off Seymour Place behind Great Cumberland Place. It is part of the Portman Estate and falls within a designated conservation area. The mews contains around twelve properties in mixed residential and commercial use, set behind security gates and fronted by a mix of period and rebuilt houses. A high-explosive bomb struck the mews during the Second World War and much of the original fabric had to be rebuilt. It sits a short walk from Marble Arch and the northern edge of Hyde Park. The poverty maps of the late Victorian period rated the immediate area as having fairly comfortable living conditions.
