Jacob's Well Mews is a cul-de-sac off George Street in W1U, reached through an archway passage beneath an existing building. It runs north to south and contains eleven properties, now in mixed residential and commercial use. The mews was developed in the early 1790s as part of the Portman Estate and was originally known simply as Jacob's Mews. It was renamed after a tavern called the Jacob's Well that stood at the end of the mews until 1893. The name Jacob traces back to Jacob Hinde, a local landowner who gave his name to several nearby streets. The scientist Michael Faraday lived here briefly as a child, his family having moved to the mews in 1796.
