Nutford Place
Nutford Place is a short residential street on the western edge of Marylebone, situated close to the junction of George Street and Edgware Road, within the Portman Estate. The Portman Estate covers approximately 110 acres of Marylebone and has its origins in land first leased to Sir William Portman in 1532. Nutford Place sits within this landholding and reflects the estate's nineteenth-century expansion northward from Portman Square.
Much of the original Georgian building stock north of Portman Square was redeveloped during the Victorian period and into the twentieth century, with mansion blocks replacing earlier terraces on many streets close to Edgware Road and Baker Street. Nutford Place has seen a similar evolution, combining residential and mixed-use buildings that reflect different phases of development on the estate.
Among the street's current occupants is Sylvia Young Theatre School, based at 1 Nutford Place, which has brought a different kind of activity to this otherwise residential address. The Portman Estate retains active management of properties on the street, including nos. 22 to 23. Nutford Place's position near Edgware Road gives it good transport access while remaining within the quieter residential grid that defines the western part of the estate, away from the more prominent streets leading toward Portman Square.
