Porter Street is a short residential street in Marylebone, running approximately 73 metres between Chiltern Street to the west and Baker Street to the east, within the W1U postal area. The street falls squarely within the Portman Estate, which has managed this part of Marylebone since Sir William Portman acquired the Manor of Lileston in 1532.
The street is most closely associated with Portman Mansions, a Victorian mansion block built in the late nineteenth century that straddles both Porter Street and Chiltern Street. The block, comprising around 120 flats, exemplifies the pattern of Georgian town house replacement common across the northern Portman Estate during the 1880s and 1890s, when landed freeholders redeveloped smaller plots into larger residential lettings.
Porter Street sits a short walk south of Marylebone Road and within three minutes of Baker Street Underground station, served by five lines. The surrounding area retains a mix of period mansion conversions and well-maintained Georgian remnants. The street is maintained under Westminster City Council's highway authority, and its modest scale is characteristic of the quieter residential lanes that run between Marylebone's principal north-south arteries.
