Sherlock Mews is a cobbled cul-de-sac running off Paddington Street in W1U, aligned with Broadstone Place and Kenrick Place. It belongs to the Portman Estate and sits within the Portman Estate Conservation Area. The mews has 10 properties, all residential, in two and three storey buildings with mansard and parapet rooflines in plain or painted brick. Most garages remain intact. Originally called York Mews South, it was renamed Sherlock Mews in the early twentieth century, a nod to its proximity to Baker Street and the fictional detective. The properties were built around 1800 to serve as stables and coach houses for the main Baker Street terraces.
