All About

Transept Street

Transept Street is a short residential street in the northern reaches of Marylebone, carrying the NW1 postcode and running between Old Marylebone Road and Chapel Street. It sits at the boundary between the more intensely medical district to the south and the area closer to Marylebone station and the Marylebone Road.

The street is notable for its proximity to Oxford and Cambridge Mansions, a substantial red-brick residential development dating from 1885, which occupies the block between Transept Street and Cabbell Street. The mansions are among the more recognisable late-Victorian residential buildings in this part of Marylebone, and give the immediate streetscape a distinctly different character from the Georgian terraces further south on the estate.

The broader area around Marylebone station developed in the 1890s when the Great Central Railway extended its line into London, opening Marylebone station in 1899. The Hotel Great Central, now the Landmark London, was built in the same year to serve passengers using the terminus. Transept Street lies within walking distance of the station and has formed part of that late-Victorian and Edwardian residential layer built to serve both the station and the expanding professional population of the neighbourhood.

The street is today almost entirely residential, with the flat stock in the NW1 5 postcodes largely occupied by younger professionals. It connects the Marylebone High Street district to the edge of Lisson Grove.
