All About

Westmorland Street

Westmorland Street, also spelled Westmoreland in some records, is a north-south street in the eastern part of Marylebone, running from Beaumont Street and Weymouth Street in the north to New Cavendish Street in the south. It carries the W1G postcode and falls within the Howard de Walden Estate.

The street was built from the 1760s by William Franks, as part of the wider Georgian development of this section of Marylebone. The northern section above Wheatley Street was originally named Woodstock Street before being absorbed under the present name. The origin of the Westmorland designation is uncertain, though county names were a common convention among the Georgian developers of both the Howard de Walden and Portman estates.

The street is historically significant as the location of the National Heart Hospital, which was established here and constructed new premises on Westmorland Street in 1913. The hospital was one of the first institutions in the world built specifically for the treatment of cardiovascular disease. On 3 May 1968, the surgical team led by Donald Ross performed Britain's first heart transplant at the National Heart Hospital, the tenth such operation worldwide following Christiaan Barnard's pioneering Cape Town surgery in December 1967. The hospital is now University College Hospital at Westmoreland Street.

The street connects naturally with the broader medical district around Harley Street to the west.
