Wimpole Mews is a cobbled residential mews on the Howard de Walden Estate, running between Weymouth Street and New Cavendish Street just west of Marylebone High Street in W1G. Like most mews in the area, it began as stable and coachhouse accommodation serving the surrounding Georgian terraces, fell into disrepair through the early twentieth century, and was progressively converted to residential use from the 1950s onward. It entered the public record for a different reason in 1962: Christine Keeler, a central figure in the Profumo affair, was living at number 17 when her former lover fired shots at the front door, an incident that helped bring a government scandal into full public view. The mews today is entirely residential.
