Mandeville Place
Mandeville Place is a north-to-south street in Marylebone, connecting Wigmore Street at its southern end to Hinde Street at the north. Postcoded W1U, it was built around 1777 and named after the Viscount Mandeville, the courtesy title of the Duke of Manchester, whose residence in nearby Manchester Square gave this pocket of the Portman Estate its primary toponymic reference.
The street occupies a distinctive social register within Marylebone. When the London County Council proposed renaming Mandeville Place as part of Marylebone High Street in 1936, shopkeepers and residents mounted successful opposition. Residents, many of them medical professionals, argued that the Mandeville Place address carried specific cachet, and they were particularly reluctant to lose that distinction through association with a retail thoroughfare. The episode illustrates how precisely calibrated reputational geography could be, even within a single neighbourhood.
The Mandeville Hotel, an Edwardian building on the street, was requisitioned during the Second World War to house injured airmen. It has since operated as a hotel and remains one of the street's more recognisable buildings. The medical profession's presence on Mandeville Place echoes the wider Harley Street district nearby, and the street's buildings are notably more substantial in scale than those on the blocks immediately to the north and south, giving it a slightly elevated architectural character. Today it is used for a mixture of professional, hotel, and residential purposes.
